Come and join us in a fine dining experience at the Surf 'n' Turf Restaurant , in the open, warm, evening air, under a traditional carat shed, set in a lush, tropical garden The atmosphere is friendly, elegant and casual at the same time, you would feel just as comfortable in bare feet and relaxed clothing as you would in an evening dress.
This quiet, intimate restaurant used to be located at Crown Point and has now moved to the Bamboo Walk Hotel, on the Old Milford Road, Lowlands, Tobago, just opposite to the back entrance of the Tobago Plantations Golf Course (Hilton). Although slightly off the beaten track, it is only a 10 minutes drive from Crown Point and well worth a visit even if one is not staying at the Bamboo Walk Hotel.
Breakfast is provided from 7 am and nothing could be simpler than just walking a very short distance to the beautifully shaded carat shed and having fantastic coffee from the elaborate, recently imported Italian coffee machine. The continental breakfast, very reasonably priced, is one of the best on the island, but there are plenty of other choices too, including a local breakfast. To have this right on your doorstep makes life very easy, as a good breakfast is something not too easy to find in Tobago.
And it is not only breakfast; the lunches are great too and to be tried is the chef’s prawn tempura, it’s just great! Drinks are available all day long from the bar. In the evening the carat shed becomes the Surf ‘n” Turf restaurant, for fine dining.
The food is outstanding and is amongst the finest in Tobago, especially when it comes to value for money. There are two chefs, Philip Into and Andy Penalba, both of whom come from the Philippines and have had a lot of experience working in restaurants and hotels there. They have been trained in Chinese, Filipino and International cuisine and Andy hosted a TV cooking show in Cebu before coming to Tobago. It is the subtle spiced flavours that are a fusion of Asian and Caribbean that give the Surf n’ Turf its trademark. The lobster, as a dish on its own or as part of the surf n’ turf signature dish, accompanied by a tenderloin steak, exudes these subtle spices – lemon grass, flavoured peppers, to mention a few, nothing too hot, so it’s OK to ask for it “spicy”.
The roasted and baked rack of lamb, marinated with fennel seed, garlic and fresh herbs ranks with the finest and adds variety to a very interesting menu. The roasted duck breast, alongside grilled jumbo prawns, “entangled” in a pineapple, mango and apricot sauce, illustrates this perfectly.
And for those who like to keep it more simple and vegetarian, there is a great curried vegetable dish, a pasta dish and Callaloo soup, a Tobago special.
Appetizers include real buffalo mozzarella and tomato salad, surf n’ turf salad which is a combination of feta cheese and green olives, and with the coffee machine all the way from Italy standing proudly at the bar, it is easy to see that a Mediterranean presence is very alive here.
Even the desserts have a surf n’ turf in their midst, in the form of a caramel custard and it is delicious! And if the hot climate is too much for a solid dessert, then there’s a liquid desserts section - freshly brewed Italian coffee, amaretto liqueur, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, for example.
With the well stocked bar, an aperitif by the pool, followed by a wonderful dinner, served by really friendly staff, is as good a way to spend any evening of your holiday in Tobago. And the Surf n’ Turf is not just a place for tourists; it brings in plenty of people who live on the Island of Tobago.
On Friday nights the fine dining turns into BBQ and Karaoke, which bring in a great mix of people from all over the island. And on Sunday evening, by popular request, there is another Karaoke evening incase the Friday one was missed. It’s great fun, the staff joins in and everyone has a good time.
